AST Whitepaper: Choosing a Bearing Closure

October 3, 2014 by Christine Berlly

Detailed White Papers

Choosing the appropriate closure is an integral consideration for optimizing bearing performance, and AST’s engineers have created a comprehensive whitepaper to explain some of the most common types of closures.

Ball and roller type bearings are available with a range of different closures, which are types of shields and seals. They are instrumental in extending bearing life and performance by preventing contaminants from reaching the critical surfaces inside the bearing. They are also instrumental in helping to retain lubricant in the bearing.

The whitepaper takes an in-depth look at some of the more common styles of closures, including ZZS, ZZ, 2RS, 2RU, 2VS and TTS. The information also provides readers with example images, operating temperatures, torque and speed considerations, bearing contact points and other important details.

The document also explains details for larger bore bearings, such as double lip rubber seals, felt seals and shrouded seals AST can also provide special designs of closures.
