Bearing Grease Consistency White Paper

Bearing Grease

Bearing grease consistency can greatly impact performance.

Bearing grease consistency can greatly affect the performance of the bearing and consequently the performance of the mechanical device or product.

Most people are familiar with the term “viscosity” as the measurable consistency of oil lubricants.  However, the average person probably does not know what the equivalent measurement for the consistency of grease (hint: it’s not viscosity). Bearing grease consistency is measured in “penetration levels.”

AST Bearings has created a mini white paper which covers the topic of “Bearing Grease Consistency.”  In it the following topics are covered:

  • Grease Penetration Definition
  • How is Unworked Penetration Measured?
  • How is Worked Penetration Measured?
  • Comparing Worked and Unworked Penetration
  • Channeling Grease Characteristics
  • Grease Consistency Plays Role in Preventing Fretting Corrosion

You can learn more about bearing grease consistency at AST’s Bearing Resource Center.

  3. Thanks for the article on grease consistency. It answers a lot of questions I had about grease. However, I am wondering about how long a grease is good for. I mean, do they expire? I know that they can break down depending on use, but do greases have expirations or life expectancies? Please let me know if you can. Thx!

  4. George, we’re glad that you found our new article on “Bearing Grease Consistency” helpful.

To answer your question about bearing grease life expectancy, “yes” lubricants to have expiration dates associated with them. We go into great detail about them in our white paper entitled, “The Shelf Life of Lubricants in Precision Ball Bearings.” You can find this and other helpful white papers about bearings at: http://www.astbearings.com/technical-information.html
